STATEMENT
The work as a whole is mainly informed by graphic design and advertising, which are major forms of visual communication in contemporary society. This influence can be seen in the crisp lines that are meticulously painted, without the aid of stencils or masks, in order to convey the idea of them being printed by mechanical means. Upon closer inspection, the nuances of the paint application are revealed as an appearance paradox of the handcrafted against the machine made.
All the images used in the paintings are appropriations from different sources, Google searches, clip art books, magazines, pornographic Mexican comic books and even fliers left on the windshield of my car. In an attempt to challenge notions of artistic originality this approach morphs the creative process through a selective act, much like a DJ remixes and samples pre-existing music into something different and fresh.
